Retail Food Store, Maesteg
Maesteg, Bridgend
The new food store at Maesteg is built on the site of a historic ironworks, preserving the remains of a scheduled blast furnace and a grade II listed engine house. The adjacent Leisure Centre and Maesteg Rugby Club benefit from shared facilities provided by the development.
The “challenging” site required carefully designed retaining structures on the boundaries and includes a new bridge over the Lynfi River to access the development. The scheme was carefully designed in conjunction with CADW and the Local Authority, to respect the surrounding heritage, and included extensive archaeological investigation of the former iron works during the development.
