Planning approval has now been granted by the City of Edinburgh Council for a new Sainsburys store on Inglis Green Road adjacent the Water of Leith in Edinburgh.

The 100,000 ft2 store will be constructed on stilts with car parking below, and a front glazed atrium will contain vertical circulation to the upper sales floor level.

Externally the scheme also includes a petrol filling station, decked service yard, highways improvements, extensive landscaping and ramped and stepped access to the main road for pedestrians.

The site is bounded by the Water of Leith to the rear, and is dominated by an arched stone viaduct to the side providing a dramatic backdrop to the site.

The viaduct influenced the provision of two towers to the front facade at each end of the glazed atrium; with teracotta rainscreen tiling forming arches around fully glazed vertical elements.
